Emergency food is one of the major factors to whether or not you and your family will survive a natural disaster, man made disaster or any form of crisis that cuts off the food supply chain abruptly. There are many forms of emergency foods:
MRE or meals ready to eat are dehydrated meals that originated in the military. These foods store for a long period of time and are ready to eat with all the nutrition and minerals one needs to survive. They usually come in a lightweight package with enough food to last one person 72 hours with 2000 calories per day. They are easily packed and carried, if the circumstance requires one to be evacuated. The trade off is that they are not gourmet meals and taste bland. However survival is key and when the chips are down they will taste as good as a rib eye.
Dried foods range from fruits and vegetables t all assortments of meat. This can be as simple as beef jerky and dried apples you buy at the store. The problem is that these foods only last a short period of time if not packaged for long-term storage. Most store bought brands are not contained properly but one can repackage these items using our long term containers would allow you to store these items for that crisis.
Canned goods do last much longer but are not good situations requiring evacuation. It is always good to keep canned goods around in case of an emergency. Make sure you regularly check the expiration dates as some canned goods become toxic once they have reach the past due date.
Fruits and vegetables are great for emergencies. They will provide sustainable energy and are light weight. They are perishables so you would have to have these items fresh prior to the emergency and don't make for a solid plan when making putting together an emergency food kit.
