As ones plans for and implements food storage both on a short term and long term basis it is often helpful to find food storage sets (FSS) that can be flexibly used to store a range of foods for a range of purposes. Most FSS on the market are not design for long term storage; so one must be discriminating with regard to the purpose you are buying for.

Following are a listing of FSS which are readily available in the market in the United States at the beginning of 2010. The list is not exhaustive and you should do your own due diligence, but it will give you an idea of some of the variety of FSS that is available in the market.

Ten piece clear FSS by Pyrex. Clear containers are an advantage to enable one to see what is stored, but for long term storage light on the food shortens its longevity. This set has a variety of sizes and shapes which offers a great deal of choice and flexibility.

Four piece round glass FSS by Bormioli. This set has a nice design and is popular. Many people prefer glass to plastic, because over time proper glass containers tend not to contaminate food materials as much as plastics.

Sto 'N Go four piece FSS by Baker. This product is designed less to optimize storage time than to make storing and move small food item easy. These containers have handles on top to make carrying food items from one place to another.

Compact stainless food jar FSS by Thermos. This product can be purchase as sole units or in sets of several jars. Again one must look at the design purposes of FSS. These optimize the maintaining of temperature of food at a high or low temperature, and so for instance would not be optimal given pricing for longer term storage.

Grey rectangular six piece FSS by Click-Clack. This stackable set has the flexibility of refrigerator storage to longer term panty storage. The opaque nature of the container wall, the tight seal and the durable nature of this product give it true long term storage viability.

Sixteen piece FSS by Klip It. This is an example of a set that provides lots of containers in three different sizes and configurations. So what is being emphasized is the number of containers rather than a large number of different sizes and shapes.

Seventeen piece FSS by Heritage. Again the emphasis is on volume of containers. They are clear and can accommodate small amounts of food up to for instance a whole turkey.

Twenty Four piece FSS by Metro Marketing. This set not only has greater volume but also a larger variety of containers. One question the purchaser must ask is, how many containers do I really need. If you need a whole lot with a lot of variety then this product bears looking into.

One will find that most food storage containers that are designed for long term storage do not come as a part of FSS. The one exception in the above list is the Click-Clack product. There are many containers that are intended for bulk storage and long term care which have similar qualities of uniform design that allow for stackability and close storage side by side.
