Fundamentally food storage containers allow one to extend the useful life of foods of all kinds. Many times this involves mostly just holding foods in refrigeration or otherwise for a short period of time until the food is consumed in the normal cycle of food consumption. Most often, however, when a container is designed for storage, the purpose of its use is to preserve food for an extended period of time.
Fresh food: In the 1940s and 1950s Tupperware pioneer designing all sorts of containers, which people began to use for all sorts of fresh foods. Every decade since there has been a growth of choices that are available for people who want food to be available for longer periods of time. Some containers have vents and others are sealed; some are solid and others can be compressed. It is helpful for the average home kitchen to have a broad variety of sizes and shapes and types for a wide variety of uses.
Dry food: The key element of a container for dry food is that it needs to be air and moisture tight. That is, in addition to keeping other elements from entering the container, one wants dry food to remain free from moister and the circulation of air within the sealed container. It is also advisable to have a large enough opening – sometimes an opening within an opening - just large enough to get a measuring cup or reasonable size scoop to into the container to obtain some of the dry good. The variety of dry food is very broad from fruits and vegetables to whole grains, and staples such as flour and sugar.
There are many reasons to use such containers. Saving money is an important reason, when one is trying to be financially careful. Buying food in bulk and carefully preserving it saves food and is sensitive to the environment. Often one can buy food more efficiently in local markets if one has such containers to keep it in.
Some practical tips would be as follows. Buy rectangular storage units because more containers can be stored with those shapes. In the process of cleaning containers use bleach to reduce orders, but if you do be sure to wash very thoroughly so that no remnant of bleach remains. Label your food so that you do not have to open a container to find what food is inside. Frequently opening containers brings a fresh rush of air and sometimes some moisture which can compromise how long the food will remain viable. Store your food in usable sizes so that for instance you do not try to keep several years of food in one container that you are constantly opening. In reality the length of time the food will stay in good shape will be compromised. Purchasing sets of containers is helpful for various reasons. It is usually economical, and they tend to fit together well. In addition, it reduces the chaos in your collection of containers, so that especially someone who is not fully familiar with your kitchen can make some sense out of what containers to use.
