To properly determine if you want dried fruit for food storage you should evaluate the reasons for having it. On the one hand nothing beats recently pick, ripe, juicy fruit. On the other hand during seasons when fruit is not growing one can turn to the dried variety and find close to the amount of nutrition. It may not look as good as fresh fruit, and will have a more muted color and different texture than the fresh variety.  However dried fruit and be very tasty. The drying process which optimizes taste and nutrition is freeze dried fruit.

When freeze dried, it can be stored for long periods of time.  When properly stored, it can last more than a year and sometimes much longer. So one does not need to rotate this storage all that oftent, but it is probably best to rotate it more than once per year. That ensures that your supplies will be in optimal condition.

This fruit can be stored compactly.  It is light and convenient for hikers, camper and athletes for instance who want a good tasting, high nutrition food with a decent sugar content to achieve rapid recovery from physical activity.  For these reasons it is often a preferred snack.

One important reason for using this fruit is that it doesn’t spoil in just a short period of time.  With fresh fruit, it is hard not to have significant spoilage on a regular basis.  So to optimize this aspect of freeze dried fruit be sure to store with air tight packaging, and in a cool dry place.   This ensures that the money you are spending on fruit is well spent. Freeze dried fruit may have a premium cost, but in the long run it actually can save you money for these purposes.

The point is not to discourage eating fresh fruit when it is in season and is available. That is of course a first choice. On the other hand even during the growing season for fruit, if you want an easy, light, long lasting food when you are on the move, freeze dried is hard to beat.
