In ancient times dogs hunted for their own fresh food and many breeds continue to help men hunt for game. In modern times, however, it is unusual for dogs to forage for their own food outside of third world settings. Some dogs such as salukis in the middle east are encouraged to hunt game and are rewarded with the food they hunt. Cats are perhaps the most self sufficient pets in hunting their own food. Some pet food can be stored indefinitely because it is alive. For instance grubs and worms are ideal food for numerous birds and many other small pets.
